2017 IKTHOF US Nationals ProAm Knife & Tomahawk Throwing Championships

You are invited to join us for the 2017 IKTHOF US Nationals Knife & Tomahawk Championships hosted by Blade Aces Las Vegas at the Superhero Foundry in Las Vegas, Nevada! From April 7th to 9th, some of the world’s best knife and tomahawk throwers will step up to the line in an exciting competition to win the Mike Alamo Bainton Golden Jackpot trophy in Knife and Tomahawk throwing. PLUS the US Nationals will feature the ProAm Conventional Knife and Tomahawk Throwing Championships as well as several other high skill events to determine accuracy, dexterity and proficiency in the sport of precision throwing arts.

The entire event will be directed and filmed like an ESPN broadcast, complete with on camera interviews, a play-by-play broadcast by TV hosts and a set complete with electronic media and displays that will make the sport even more professional and spectacular than ever!!!

We will be debuting the new electronic recording and scoring system designed specifically for IKTHOF tournaments. We’ve been working hard with Ron Thomas and through a generous donation from Hewlett-Packard (donated over 20 tablets!) in developing a proprietary scoring & recording system that will make keeping scores more exciting and less laborious for the scorekeepers and scorers. Scores will be posted on a large TV screen and available in real time. Parts of the event will also be broadcast live via Facebook Live and the entire event will be shot and edited then submitted to ESPN for consideration for broadcast. Professional cameras, editing, graphics and sound equipment will be utilized and therefore a massive sponsorship effort is required.

There will be Youth, Junior, and Senior divisions as well as a No Spin Division and No Spin games. We will also feature the return of our super popular Vegas style money games (Roulette and Blackjack) and the Trick Throw Challenge from the first Blade Aces Tournament in 2015. Sponsors and prize donors are encouraged to contact Melody & TJ Cuenca early (before the March 7th deadline) so that we may put your names on the banners, advertisements, video graphics and promotional materials be created for this event.

First prize for Professional Conventional Knife and Conventional Tomahawk high scores are $500 each, with $300 for second place and $100 for third place. There will be a unique slot machine trophy for each of the winners of the Mike Alamo Bainton Golden Jackpot (Gold Cup) Challenge and mini trophies for the Gold Cup Youth Champions as well.

Traditional games like Silhouette, Speed Throw, Fast Draw, and Long Distance Knife & Tomahawk will also take place on Sunday, April 9th. We expect a large turnout for this event and many throwers have already booked their flights and reserved rooms for this event! Registration limited to first 50 paid registrations due to space limitations at our venue. $150 for pro division (knife & tomahawk), $150 for semi-pro (knife or tomahawk) and $100 for amateur division. First 20 registrants will be entered into a special drawing for show tickets and dinner at some of Las Vegas’ incredible venues! Over $2,500 in cash and prizes!!!

Preliminary rules will be posted soon. Events scheduled are based of available sponsorships and are subject to change. Finalized schedule of events, prizes, sponsors and rules will be made no later than March 7, 2017. Contact TJ or Melody Cuenca through Facebook or email us at director@superherofoundry.com for more details after January 15, 2017.

No Spin Knife Throwing Rules and Regulations
IKTHOF “No-Spin” Event
The event will consist of 60 throws from 5 distances: 3 throws per distance and 4 rounds. The 3 targets are set to be thrown from left to right. Standard IKTHOF targets will be used along with traditional scoring with 5 points awarded to the center bulls-eye, 4 to the outer circle, etc. If a target is struck unintentionally and out of order it will count as zero (no score).
The knife must be thrown with a “No-Spin” technique, which means it completes an approximate ¼ rotation or less. In some cases the knife’s handle will lead the knife on release. This is technically a larger rotation than a ¼ spin but since the knife was held by the handle, it is considered a no-spin or ¼ spin throw and is permissive. Since there are several techniques in performing a no-spin upon release, as long as the knife is held by the handle, and hits the target point first without a rotation greater than described above, it is permissible.
Knives
Three (3) near identical knives are needed for this event. The knives and the competitors technique will be approved before hand by the Range Master on a practice lane to make sure the competitors technique is acceptable, safe for viewers/competitors and that the knives stay within the following rules:
The knives used will not exceed 16” (40.64cm) long from tip to handle.
The minimum length is 10” (25.4cm) from tip to handle.
The minimum weight is 8oz (226g).
Bo Shuriken or Spikes longer than 10” (25.4cm) and less than 16” (40.64cm) in length and at least 5oz (141.7g) in total weight are also permitted and encouraged. If the knife is untraditional or in question, the Range Master must approve the knife before competition.
Handles are permitted on knives, Bo Shuriken and Spikes. Any material is acceptable: Tape, Sports Wrap, Para-cord, and Twine with Epoxy coat, etc.
*Gyro knives, Flying Knives, or any other knife that allows air to pass through the handle to hinder spin is not permitted. Fletching, tassels, are also not permitted. In addition, a length of cordage or chain cannot be attached to the knife to be thrown like a rope-dart. Short spears are not permitted. The regulations for this event define a spear as over 13” (33.02cm) in length with a point/blade which length makes up for less than a third of the implements overall length.
Grips
The knife will be gripped by the handle. The point of the blade upon release is either pointing upwards or slightly toward target. At further distances, the point of the blade may be slightly beyond the 12:00 position (Technically, slightly above a ¼ spin). The knife can be held or palmed as high on the blade as one desires. However, the thrower is not permitted to touch the last inch of blade closest to the point when throwing. While not encouraged, the knife can be pinched in the same manner as one would pinch a spear.
*Note that sidearm releases are permissible.
*Note that underhand releases are NOT permissible.
Distances
The thrower must throw behind these respective lines:
2m (6’7”), 3m (9’10”), 4m (13’1”), 5m (16”5”) and 6m (19’8”).
If the competitor steps over the set boundary line, he will be warned by the lane official. If it happens again, the score for that throw will be zero (no score) regardless of the knife’s impact. If the competitor executes a sidearm throw, he is allowed to straddle the boundary of the lane but one foot must remain within the lane and behind the set distance. This must be done in a way that does not interfere with another competitor and if this proves to be too distracting he can allow the other thrower to proceed so there is a free lane to his left. If a competitor needs to step forward on each release, they are permitted to do so, as long as the final step is within the set boundary line.
Style
No-Spin is an instinctive style of throwing and has a variety of ways to perform the technique. Release, stance, arm motion, arm position and body movement and grip will vary. As long as the competitor stays within the defined rules and regulations as described above, we encourage you to have fun! Three IKTHOF regulation targets.Targets will have 10 cm or 4 inch center (worth 5 points.), 20cm ring (worth 4 points.), a 30 cm outer ring (worth 3 points.). A 40 cm ring worth 2 points and a 50 cm ring worth 1 point. Knives are scored as they stick, and each thrower must have 3 hawks of the same length and style. The targets will be thrown from left to right. Heights of targets are top targets 60 inches to center, Center target 50-inches to center;

Throwers must beat the House within the first two throws (one knife in each target) or hit (throw a third knife) on the third target.  The goal is to win 10 coins in order to progress to the second round. A win against the house wins whatever you’ve bet.  A draw wins nothing. A Black Jack wins double.  Once a player qualifies for the next round by winning 10 coins, they must step down and make way for a new player.  Whoever has the most coins after 60 minutes of play will be the winner.  Second highest is second place and third highest is third place.  In case of tie, there must be an ALL-IN tie breaker between the two throwers.

Trifecta(Demonstration Game):  Three targets set up with a ‘skinny target’ (7″ x 24″)  at 5 meters and 2 meters and the third target (IKTHOF regulation size) at 0 meters. Using only no spin or half spin, throwers must begin their movement behind the 7 meter line throwing at the skinny target to their left at the 5 meter line.  Then the thrower throws at the second target on their right at the 2 meter line and finally the center target.  Points are scored where they stick.  This process is done three times with a total possible high score of 45 points.

Fast Draw Knife (Traditional Game): A Bowie knife or period knife with a minimum length of 12 inches and scaled with leather, bone, antler or wooden scales will be required for this contest. The blade of the knife must be fully sheathed with the throat of the sheath at the throwers waist line. Throwers will start with their throwing hand held shoulder high in front of the thrower.  The off hand can hold the sheath in place at the waist of the thrower.Upon the electronic signal or if no electronic signal upon the command GO each thrower will pull his or her knife from the belt around the throwers waist and throw at the target in front of them. The first knife to hit the target successfully in the IKTHOF regulation scoring area will win. If the Throwers both drop their knives the judge will give them a total of 3 chances. If both throwers fail to stick their knife in the IKTHOF regulation target after the third try both throwers are disqualifies. The loser of the competition between the two contestants is then out of the contest. The winner of the two contestants will then move to the back of the line of waiting throwers. At no time can any thrower change position in the waiting line after the range master has placed you in line or after you have won a heat.  To do so would mean disqualification.

Rock Around the Clock  (Demonstration Game): Three knives maximum.  Distance: 3 meters. This variation of the Silhouette game is a combination of speed and accuracy.  Twelve four inch targets are arranged in a circle around a central 13th target.  The thrower begins their run by throwing at the target marked “1” and proceeds in numerical order around the clock.  After every series of three knives thrown, the thrower must run to retrieve their knives and continue throwing until the 12th target is struck or attempted at which point the clock is stopped.  Every target missed adds 3 seconds to the final time.  Striking Elvis adds 10 seconds to the time.  Score is evaluated based on the number of targets hit and time it took to complete the run.

RouletteMoney Game): Variation on Fast Draw competition. Two knives. Distance 3 meters.  Knives can be held in hand or in sheaths. Only the first and third targets in the lane are used in this game. The first target will have two 12″ x 12″ areas side by side colored red and black.  The third target is divided into two halves placed one above (HIGH 9 to 16) and one over marked LOW (1 to 8). The roulette wheel is spun and when it stops at a number and color combination, the throwers must throw their knives based on the combination shown. For example, if the wheel stops at 7 Red, the throwers must throw and stick their first knife into the red portion of the first target and the second knife into the lower half (LOW) of the third target. The first thrower to stick both targets correctly will win the round. The knife MUST be completely within the zone. Any knife cutting through the separating line is counted a foul. There will be FIVE rounds and the winner is the one who wins best of five rounds. In case of a tie, there will be a sudden death throw off where the first to stick both knives correctly, wins. The champion is the one who won the most number of rounds.

Open Division: NO SPIN COMPETITION

All throwers No Spin throwers,Amateurs Spin throwers, Seniors or Professional conventional throwers may enter the no spin competition. No Spin Knife Throwing

Rules and Regulations
Style
No-Spin is an instinctive style of throwing and has a variety of ways to perform the technique. Release, stance, arm motion, arm position and body movement and grip will vary. As long as the competitor stays within the defined rules and regulations as described above, we encourage you to have fun! Three IKTHOF regulation targets.Targets will have 10 cm or 4 inch center (worth 5 points.), 20cm ring (worth 4 points.), a 30 cm outer ring (worth 3 points.). A 40 cm ring worth 2 points and a 50 cm ring worth 1 point. Knives are scored as they stick, and each thrower must have 3 knives of the similar length and style. The targets will be thrown from left to right. Heights of targets are top targets 60 inches to center, Center target 50-inches to center;
